Acne Scars

Some patients that suffer from acne will develop scarring after outbreaks. The severity of scarring can vary from superficial blemishes to deep pits on the face. However, there are numerous treatments that can be used alone, or in combination, to markedly reduce or soften acne scars that cause discomfort and embarrassment. Available treatments include topical agents, surgical excision, or several minimally invasive laser therapies. Our dermatologists are expert at determining and implementing the most effective therapies for the quickest route to clearer skin.

Blackheads/Whiteheads

Acne in the form of blackheads and whiteheads is extremely common and easily treatable. Sebum, which is responsible for keeping the skin and hair moisturized, can get trapped in follicles and produce blackheads and/or whiteheads. Good basic facial care is the foundation for clear skin, and we can quickly determine the appropriate skin care regimen, best products, and in-office treatments that will produce smoother, clearer skin, free of unattractive blackheads and whiteheads. Hyperhidrosis- Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is the excessive sweating of the face, hands, feet, and underarms, stemming from the production of perspiration beyond what is necessary to cool the body. The condition can be debilitating, uncomfortable, and embarrassing, however it is easy to treat. We have helped many patients who suffer from this condition, all of whom spoke of renewed confidence and comfort in their daily lives. There are three main treatment regimens for hyperhidrosis: Botox®, which reduces excessive underarm sweating, can dramatically improve your quality of life, oral medications can control widespread sweating and topical agents may also be used for less severe cases.

Lentigines- Brown Spots or Age Spots

Lentigines, also known as sun spots, age spots or liver spots, are flat, brown discolorations of the skin, most commonly found on the back of the hands, neck, and face. Lentigines are caused by repeated sun exposure over many years. While using sunscreen is the best preventative measure, there are non-invasive treatments available to eliminate these spots, including lasers, topical agents, freezing and chemical peels.   Our dermatologists will gladly discuss the best treatment options available for your specific condition.

Melasma

Melasma is a very common disorder that presents with irregular-shaped brown spots or patches of varying shades on both sides of the face, especially on the forehead, nose, cheeks, upper lip, chin, and other sun-exposed areas of the body. It is capable of spreading over time, and worsens with continued sun exposure. Melasma occurs primarily in women and can also be associated with pregnancy. It is essential to use sunscreens with a high degree of UVA and UVB protection and to discontinue using any products that irritate the skin. Topical agents such as bleaching creams and minimally invasive treatments such as chemical peels may be used to successfully treat this condition.  Please note that microdermabrasion and laser treatments are to be strictly avoided as these treatments will cause a darkening of melasma and take months or years to resolve.

Poikiloderma- Mottled Coloration on Chest or Neck

Poikiloderma refers to increased pigmentation, producing reddish-brown skin, usually on the sides and front of the neck and chest. Sun protection is the best preventative measure for poikiloderma. However, an intense pulsed light procedure (fotofacial) will reduce the coloration over several treatments. The laser light source works by emitting intense, but gentle light bursts that target abnormal tissue and leave the surrounding tissue untouched.

Port Wine Stains/Vascular Birthmarks

Port wine stains are vascular lesions that appear at birth and appear as reddish marks caused by an abundance of blood vessels. They can become larger and more apparent over time. However, cutting edge laser treatments can be tailored to treat the dilated birthmark and not affect the surrounding skin. Specifically, the V-Beam or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) lasers provide relief by penetrating deep into the skin, targeting the blood vessels, and eliminating the affected tissues. Several laser treatments are usually required.

Rosacea- Facial Redness and Capillaries

Rosacea is a common skin disease that results in facial redness, pimples, spider veins and swelling. It can progress from a flushed look, to constant redness on the cheeks, chin, nose, and forehead. Sometimes the ears, back, and chest are also affected. Additional complications are pimples and enlarged blood vessels in and around the red areas. This can be an embarrassing condition, however with proper diagnosis and treatment, it can easily be improved and controlled. This is a problem that our dermatologists see often and can diagnose quickly to get a treatment regimen started. Treatments may include oral medications, topical medications ,  fotofacial (IPL), or laser surgery such as the V-Beam laser.

Wrinkles and Lines on the Face, Neck, and Chest

Wrinkles on the face, neck, and chest are the result of repetitive gathering and movement of skin over time through expression, facial motions, talking and smiling. Wrinkles can also be genetic, or the result of sun exposure. Fine lines, as well as deeper lines, can be improved or eliminated through a variety of treatments:

  • Take protective measures to prevent further damage by using sunscreen;
  • Rejuvenate, restore, and improve skin by using topical agents to reverse wrinkles and lines, such as Alpha-hydroxy acid, topical Vitamin A/Retinol, Vitamin C creams, green tea creams and the latest antioxidants;
  • Chemical peels even out skin coloration and improve fine lines;
  • Human Collagen (Cosmoderm®) and Hyaluronic Acids (Restylane®, Captique®) used as a filler agent will fill-in lines, especially the nose to mouth crease, smile lines, scars, lip enhancements or any area with a loss of volume;
  • Botox® will provide dramatic improvement, resulting in smoother skin and allowing patients to accurately express their emotions and seem more refreshed and rested.

Spider Veins on the Legs

Spider veins are enlarged superficial blood vessels, most common on the legs. They are caused by repetitive high impact activities, injuries, pregnancy, and family history. Larger dilated blood vessels, or varicose veins, are raised above the skin surface and may cause discomfort, and subsequently skin ulcers. These veins are best treated with injections of Asclera® (Polidocanol) Injection or a hypertonic (high concentration) saline sclerosing solution.

Sun Damage

We now know that prolonged sun exposure can be very dangerous to the skin. A healthy approach to being out in the sun starts with preventative measures such as sunscreen, protective clothing and other treatments to keep your skin protected. However, we can treat already damaged skin with a number of procedures that will improve, or even reverse, unhealthy sun damage. Because the degree of sun damage is so different in each individual, we will create the best treatment regimen for your skin type and sun-related issues during your visit.

Telangiectasias- Spider Veins or Broken Capillaries on the Face

Broken capillaries are small, dilated blood vessels that are visible through the skin. They can become more common with age and long-term sun damage, and can be easily and expertly removed using laser therapy. Our dermatologists employ a combination of cutting edge laser technologies, such as V-Beam or IPL (photofacial) to treat spider veins in a virtually painless procedure that requires little to no recovery time. Our patients have been extremely pleased with the results achieved by this simple therapy.

Unwanted Hair

Unwanted body hair affects virtually everyone. Quick fixes, such as shaving, waxing, depilatories and tweezing are the most common ways to eliminate hair, but can be tiresome and only work temporarily. Electrolysis provides permanent hair removal, but is often slow, uncomfortable and expensive. However, there are several innovative laser treatments that eliminate unwanted hair from every part of the body efficiently and comfortably. Lasers can treat large areas of the skin quickly, and result in drastic growth delay or complete elimination. The Alexandrite Laser (Gentlelase) is used with incredible success. Patients feel confident and liberated by their new look.
